I have come across a little hiccup in my build. I got the parts today however the heatsink is so large that it is nearly blocking a PCI-E slot needed for my GPU.

Here is a pic of the mobo's layout

Now my question is can I intall my GPU on the orange PCI-E slot, instead of the blue since it is being obstructed by the heat sink?

It depends on the mobo = the manual should have that information in it, but since I've never bought an AsRock I can't say if it is there or not.

-in short, I doubt it will work. messing around, on any sli board i've tried placing a pcie gfx card in any slot other than #1 (pcie slot closest to processor) results in a message before post stating that the single card must be placed in the proper slot.

you can't turn/mount the cpu heatsink so it isn't interfering with the gpu?

^^Thanks for the info flubber, I just read through the manual like Elder suggested.

It looks like the manufacters recommend using the Blue PCI-E slot for a single card.

I guess I can use the stock heatsink/fan for now, if I can't fit the 5850.

If you are not planning to overclock the cpu, the stock HSF will be fine. Intel stock HSF tend to let the cpu run a bit hot, but it's well within operating range. In any case, it's not that hard to find a suitably sized HSF that outperforms the stock one. There are many less-than-monstrous sized HSFs that perform within a few degrees of the huge monsters.

Well I just got the 5850 in the mail and it fits! Tight fit at best.

I was going to say... my 5870 fits on that mobo with a Noctua U12 cooler... So I was confused you when you said you couldn't fit it with your heatsink. My buddy has a U14 too, and it's the largest CPU on the market. He can still fit his GPU in the blue slot.

that's actually not a tight fit by any means, it looks like you could fit a finger in there between the CPU and the GPU, and that's plenty when it comes to the innards of a computer. Glad you got it to all fit in any case.

I was thinking about installing a floppy from my old Dell, but I hardly use the floppy. Besides I need the extra space for future harddrives.

Well it is my first build ever. Seeing that much clearance is an actual surprise.

It is all done now, I just need to tidy up the cables a bit.

Does anyone use spell check?

The USB flash drive has basically killed the floppy for good. However, there are still some cases where things like RAID drivers, need to be loaded off a floppy. But, that too, is changing.
